Emergency Preparedness

The following is information from the Calgary Chamber that may be of interest to any Chambers looking to assist their members with disaster preparedness and insurance literacy. Any business across Canada can visit IBC.DiagnosticRocket.com and utilize a free diagnostic. Feel free to circulate to your members.

North American studies estimate that 43% of businesses impacted by a natural disaster do not reopen.

In 2013, Southern Alberta experienced extreme flooding, including in downtown Calgary. As a Chamber, we knew that our business community was at severe risk of significant negative impact if they were not up and running again as soon as possible. In partnership with the Calgary Emergency Management Agency, we worked to power our business community through an efficient and effective recovery by creating a network of support. The result was that more than 99% of Calgary’s businesses impacted by the floods reopened successfully. World Chamber Federation Special Project award.

Learning from our experiences from the 2013 Southern Alberta floods, the Calgary Chamber has worked with the Insurance Bureau of Canada to build a free diagnostic survey tool that will educate businesses across the country on disaster preparedness and insurance literacy.

Any business across Canada can visit IBC.DiagnosticRocket.com and utilize the free diagnostic. By taking this survey, businesses will receive personalized recommendations they can implement to help become more prepared for a disaster.

Crops of the Parkland an Interesting Attraction

“What’s that crop with yellow flowers?”  “What does flax look like?”  These are questions we hear tourists asking the staff at the Visitor Information Centre every summer.  For several years, the staff have been able to direct the tourists to the Crops of the Parkland plots to the north of the Centre.  A variety of annual crops grown in the Parkland are on display with an explanation about each.  Thank you to Thom Weir, Jim Gorman, Vic Surjick and staff from Ducks Unlimited Canada for seeding and maintaining the plot this year.  It’s truly a unique and interesting attraction for Yorkton.
