Yorkton Chamber of Commerce History 2000

At the dawn of the new millennium, the Chamber was busy with new and old initiatives. The farmers plight had the Chamber take a support position. The 3rd annual “Celebrate Success” Business awards are scheduled for October 20th, 2000 at St. Mary’s Cultural Center. Also, we have moved forward into the technological age with the posting of information on the Chamber web site – http://www.chamber.yorkton.sk.ca. Nomination forms for Celebrate Success, Membership Roster, History, and other pertinent Chamber information can now be accessed through the interactive web site.

The Premier’s Business Dinner was held March 15, 2000. in presenting the opportunity to dine and dialogue with policy makers of the day. The theme of the event was “Together, Let’s Get Saskatchewan Growing!”A new initiative, celebrating commitments to the workplace, was held on April 25, 2000 honouring “Support Associates”. This brought together employers and employees in celebration of the skills, talents and commitment to the workplace. The successful inaugural event hosted the Honourable Lieutenant Governor Dr. Lynda Haverstock as guest speaker. Plans are underway to make this an annual event.

Another new initiative for the Yorkton Chamber of Commerce was bringing a world renown workshop to our community. On May 3, 2000, the Franklin Covey Institute facilitated a One Day Time Management and Life Balance Workshop “What Matters Most”. The community was very receptive to this opportunity, a total of 25 people attended. There may be an opportunity for this workshop to revisit Yorkton this coming fall with a new workshop focused on “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Families”. As always, education is an important objective for the Chamber. In partnership with the Yorkdale Central School, the Chamber facilitated the “Shadow Program” in “Providing an Opportunity for Students to Meet with Business”. Our goal is to show students that all work is worthy of respect, to expose them to the realities of the work world, the many options of the labour market, and to introduce students to fostering the “entrepreneurial spirit”. 2000 Summer Games, July 23-29 . . . A Success! This well orchestrated athletic event has highlighted Yorkton as a community. Countless volunteers had committed their time and energy in executing a successful provincial athletic event. This, indeed, is the very spirit of why Yorkton is the best place to live and do business. “Celebrate Success 2000”, for the 3rd year in a row was, by all comments, a successful event recognizing the spirit of entrepreneurship and our commercial successes. Congratulations to our award recipients who are as follows: Business of the Year – Harvest Meats, Community Involvement – Boston Pizza, Property Restoration – Patrick Place, New/Expanded Business – Melrose Place, Customer Service – Maple Farm Equipment Ltd, Young Entrepreneur – Sunset Photo, Wall of Success – Deneschuk Homes Ltd, Harvest Meats and Maple Farm Equipment Ltd. and Event/Organization of the Year- 2000 Summer Games. Again, a tribute to all nominees, sponsors, volunteers, membership and community who help to make this event so successful. Â
