Partnership for Resource Trade
The Yorkton Chamber is supportive of a new initiative from the Canadian Chamber, the Partnership for Resource Trade, which seeks to engage Canadians in the important national discussion about the key role that natural resources play in our success as a country.

In addition to sharing some of the Sask Chamber’s recent policy “wins”, the Sask Chamber presented its 2016 On Track document- “a series of recommendations to help the government of Saskatchewan fulfill its mandate after the 2016 election.”

2014’s Celebrate Success Business Awards Gala was a highly successful, sold-out event! Over 80 nominations were received for the various categories. From these, the Judging Panel narrowed the field down to 44 finalists. The Judging Panel was also charged with the task of selecting the Small and Large Business of the Year. RH Electric accepted the Large Business of the Year Award sponsored by SaskPower. Wagner’s Flooring accepted the Small Business of the Year Award also sponsored by SaskPower. Royal Auto Group accepted the Business Growth and Expansion Award sponsored by BMO Bank of Montreal. Fedorowich Construction received the Work Family Balance Award sponsored by Canadian Western Bank. Yorkton Chamber Advocates for TFWP
Several Directors of the Yorkton Chamber of Commerce held a telephone conversation with and sent a letter to MP Garry Breitkreuz expressing the Chamber’s concern about the Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP). Potential changes to the program have Chambers across the nation concerned as many of their members are experiencing labour shortages.

Chamber Honours Ray Malinowksi with Life Membership
The award is presented to someone “who has distinguished themselves by meritorious or public service.” Mr. Malinowksi was president of the Yorkton Chamber in 1987; was President of the Saskatchewan Chamber in 1982-83 and was on the Executive Committee of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce. He has also served on numerous boards of industry associations. The Yorkton Chamber proudly introduced Mr. Malinowski at a special Business Lunch.

The Yorkton Chamber of Commerce extended its congratulations to 4 member businesses which were named Finalists for the Sask Chamber’s ABEX Awards. RH Electric is a finalist in 2 categories- Community Involvement and Growth and Expansion. NL Construction is also a finalist for the Growth and Expansion Award. Yorkton Plumbing and Heating is a finalist in the Service Category. RCM Safety Services is a finalist in the New Business Venture Category.

Railway Crossings and Drop down Arms
In the September edition of the Courier, members of the Yorkton Chamber were invited to send in their responses to 2 questions about railway crossings in the city: 1) Are drop down arms needed at the crossings? 2) At which two crossings are they most needed? 35% of the responses suggested more than 2 crossings require drop down arms so their responses are not included in the tabulations for Question 2. Of those responses with only one or two suggestions for Question 2, the results are: Highway #9 South- 19%; Broadway & Laurier- 15%; Broadway & Betts-15%; York Road-12%; Gladstone & King-12%; Independent & Laurier-8%; Darlington-8%; Myrtle-4%.

New Website
The Chamber’s new website was described as “crisp”, “fresh” “interesting”, and “the website has lots of eye appeal.” Photos submitted by friends of the Chamber lend a local flavour to the website.

TransACTIONS Conference 2013
Building on past successes, the Yorkton Tribal Council and Yorkton Chamber of Commerce formed a partnership that saw the return of the TransACTIONS Conference to Yorkton. Young entrepreneurs Kendal Netmaker of Neechie Gear, Saskatoon; Devon Brooks of Blo Blow Dry Bar, Vancouver; and brothers Shawn and Lane Carrier of Monster Mowers, Ituna entertained and informed the crowd about their experiences as entrepreneurs. Sask Chamber of Commerce CEO Steve McLellan shared his thoughts on Economic Growth in Saskatchewan. He has a 6 step plan for helping communities to grow. He also introduced the Sask Chamber’s document “Let’s Try That Twice”- a paper that provides common sense ideas for helping employers and First Nations employees understand each other and find solutions for successful employment.

Twenty four employees, nominated in two different categories, were in attendance April 16th along with their employers, fellow employees and family members. Darcy Tymko received the Support Employee of the Year Award sponsored by the Parkland College. Crusader Drilling sponsored the Front Line Employee of the Year Award which was presented to Debbie Sweeney of the Palliser Way Co-op Gas Bar. Time Capsule Letters – Then & Now
In, 1980, the 75th Anniversary of the province of Saskatchewan, the city of Yorkton created a time capsule to be opened in 2005. As so often happens with time capsules, the capsule was stored and forgotten about until earlier this year. The capsule was then opened at Canada Day celebrations at the Western Development Museum. In it, was a letter from the president of the Yorkton Chamber of Commerce, Alicia A. Lomas.

Life Member Induction
For the first time since 1998, the Chamber named Honourary Life Members. At a special Chamber Business Lunch, the Yorkton Chamber of Commerce proudly inducted Mrs. Ruth Shaw and Mr. Allan Bailey as Honourary Life Members. Mrs. Shaw was the Manager of the Yorkton Chamber from 1975-1997. In 1999, she received the Council of Excellence Award from the Chamber of Commerce Executives of Canada for her meritorious service to the Chamber and community. Named as Yorkton’s Citizen of the Year in 1989, Mrs. Shaw has been a tireless community volunteer. One of her most successful volunteer efforts was the co-founding of the Yorkton Short Film Festival which began in 1947. In 2008, the Festival established The Ruth Shaw Award for the Best Saskatchewan Production. The first Ruth Shaw Award was presented at the 2009 Festival.
Mr Bailey founded Bailey’s Funeral home in 1963. The company has since opened Funeral Homes in Melville and Ituna. Mr. Bailey served as President of the Yorkton Chamber of Commerce in 1967 and as a Director of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce. He is a former Mayor and Alderman of the City of Yorkton. A tireless volunteer, Mr. Bailey was awarded the Saskatchewan Volunteer Medal in 2011.

At the Chamber Business Dinner held October2 the creators of OMG! Candy and Clodhoppers, Chris Emery and Larry Finnson, were the guest speakers. Everyone enjoyed the candy samples Chris and Larry brought with them and were entertained by their stories about being entrepreneurs.
Trades & Technology Centre to be constructed
October 15 was an exciting day for the Parkland College, the city and east central Saskatchewan when Premier Brad Wall and Rob Norris, Minister of Advanced Education announced that the province will contribute $10 million to the construction of a Trades &Technology Centre in Yorkton!

TransACTIONS Conference for Youth November 22- “It’s About Mo’ Money!”
The Yorkton Tribal Council, DREAMbuilders and Yorkton Chamber of Commerce partnered together to deliver a TransACTIONS Conference for Youth at the Gallagher Centre. Targeting high school students within a 100 km radius of Yorkton, who are interested in learning about owning a business and being entrepreneurs, the theme of the conference was “It’s About Mo’Money!” Young entrepreneurs shared their stories about what they have learned in building their own businesses.
At year end, the chamber had 460 members.

The Chamber at Work for Business
Business Lunches and Breakfasts continue to be good forums to mix networking and learning opportunities for people with busy schedules. Ewen Morrison, CEO EMW Industrial was the Guest Speaker at a Chamber Breakfast held during Sask Mining Week. Jim Walters of Crosby Hanna and Associates presented the comparisons on Zoning Bylaws it has made between Yorkton and 8 other municipalities.
The Constitution and Bylaws of the Chamber have been revised; the Events committee is planning the Chamber Business Dinner; and the other committees have their own projects on which they are working. The first 2012 member survey was conducted. President Ron Irvine presented Past President Dolores Harris with a gift of appreciation from the Board. Dolores served as 2011 President of the Chamber. Ron Irvine was named the 2011 Director of the Year Award. This award is presented to a Director who has shown commitment to the Board and the Chamber. Joytvinder Bhatti, a student at Parkland College, was presented with the 2012 Yorkton Chamber Scholarship by Chamber Director, Ryan Hoffman.

Official Visit of the Consul General of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to Yorkton
The Consul General of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, Mr. Johannes Vervloed, together with his wife, Mrs. Elisabeth Vervloed, spent 2 days visiting businesses and business people in Yorkton. The Yorkton Chamber hosted Mr. Vervloded and his delegation at a breakfast. Discussion centred on Business opportunities in the Yorkton area.

Positive Ticketing Continues in Yorkton
The Yorkton City RCMP Detachment continues to utilize the positive ticketing program to make contact with youth in our city. Positive tickets have been used in all sorts of situations. Positive tickets have been given to youth for being respectful, for making a smart decision, and to youth who helped out with younger siblings while the police attended their home.

Proposed Trades and Technology Centre Important to Region
“When the Trades and Technology Centre is built, it will have a huge economic impact on the entire community!” said Evan Ortynsky at a recent meeting of the Chamber Board of Directors. As Co-Chair of the Parkland College’s Campaign Cabinet, Evan is passionate about the need for the Trades and Technology Centre the Parkland College is proposing to Yorkton.

The Yorkton Chamber of Commerce was very pleased to have Bruce Croxon, Entrepreneur and CBC Dragon’s Den Judge as its Guest Speaker at the annual Chamber Business Dinner, October 3. Bruce entertained and informed the crowd with stories of his entrepreneurial experiences.

Member Visits Informative
Building on the success of the staff visits to Chamber members in 2011, Chamber staff embarked on visits to 74 more members in 2012. The intent of the visits was two- fold: meet with the owner or manager of the business one-on-one; and conduct a brief survey. A survey is a good way for the Chamber Board to engage the membership. The survey consisted of 6 questions:
- How is the Chamber doing? Is it visible in the community? Is it providing enough networking opportunities for the business community?
- Are you receiving the Chamber’s email blasts and the Courier? Are they useful?
- What could the Chamber be doing better?
- Would you be interested in participating in brief email surveys from the Chamber?
- What works better for you- Business Breakfast or Business Lunch?
- The Chamber’s Celebrate Business Success Awards, Employee Recognition Event and the Chamber Business Dinner are 3 unique events to Yorkton. How would you rate each of these?
The member visits were very positive. Members were pleased that “someone from the Chamber” was formally visiting their businesses. The Chamber staff appreciated that the Managers took time from their busy schedules to show off their premises and discuss future plans.
At the end of the year, the Chamber had 445 members.

Fedorowich Construction Celebrates 100 Years!

Yorkton Chamber Hosting Regional Housing Conference
The lack of available housing is a serious concern to Yorkton, towns and villages in the area. It is difficult to attract business and investment to an area when there is no place for employees to live. The Yorkton Chamber of Commerce is holding this conference April 5 at the Gallagher Centre.

Yorkton Municipal Airport –Connecting to the World
The members of the Yorkton Airport Authority (YAA) share the vision of a bustling Yorkton Municipal Airport that connects Yorkton to the world. Over the past 3 years, the YAA has raised over $1.4 million which has enabled it to replace the lighting along the runway with more easily replaceable units; and re-surfaced runways and aprons around the terminal. The Yorkton Chamber applauds the efforts of the YAA to ensure that accessibility to the business community of Yorkton and area is achieved through an increasingly enhanced airport.
Impact Analysis of Potash on Economic Development
The potash Sub-Committee of the Saskatchewan East Enterprise Region (SEER) discussed the need for an Impact Study to assess the impact of Potash Mining Expansion on the region’s communities. The SEER Board hired a consultant to undertake this study.

Visitors from the South
In mid-September, 2 planes, valued together at about $25 million, arrived at the Yorkton Airport from the United States. Their passengers spent several days in the Yorkton area. Continuing upgrades to the Yorkton Airport will ensure that more of these kinds of aircraft will be able to utilize our airport.

Premier Brad Wall addressed a sold-out business audience at the Annual Chamber Business Dinner. A number of Cabinet Ministers also attended the event providing networking opportunities for the business community.

Beginning in late June, Chamber staff began contacting Yorkton Chamber members asking if they could meet them to discuss the Chamber and ask a few questions. In total 114 businesses provided interviews. The visits proved to be very well received by the businesses. Many indicated they were pleased to have someone from the Chamber visit. The businesses also appreciated the brevity of the interviews. All businesses were informed about the upcoming Chamber election of Directors; the duties of each of the 4 committees; and the various activities and events offered by the Chamber. All businesses were asked 2 questions: How do you perceive the Chamber to be doing in the community? (Is it speaking for the businesses in Yorkton? Is it providing networking opportunities?) What could the Chamber be doing better? (How might the Chamber engage its members?) All businesses were asked if they preferred Business Breakfasts or Lunches. As the interview process evolved, 76 businesses were also asked about participating in a brief email survey if ever a big issue was facing the Board. Overall, the Chamber members are content with the job the Chamber is doing. It’s perceived as being “important” and “useful”. Only one business suggested the Chamber “take a hard stand on issues.”
At year end, the Chamber had 453 members!

The Chamber extended congratulations to a few businesses including: Richardson on the Grand Opening of their Canola Processing Plant, Terry Ortynsky’s Royal Ford on being awarded the Ford President’s Award for outstanding customer service, Saskatchewan Abilities Council on their 60th Anniversary, and the City on the opening of the new fire hall.

President Lawrence Wegner presented the Wall of Success Award to Brent and Brian Weber of Weber Construction; it has been in Yorkton for 59 years. Federowich Construction and Stamatinos Leland Campbell LLP, were also named recipients and were presented with their Awards at the Celebrate Success Gala in March.

Performance Promotions was nominated in the Promoter of the Year category at the recent Canadian Country Music Awards, Memories to Last a Life Time on receiving the New Entrepreneur Award from Sask East Enterprise Region (SEER), and to Sherry MacDonald, the Chamber’s Director of Marketing and Communications for being in recognition of her 5 years of employment at the Chamber.
Successful Chamber Business Dinner
The 12th Annual Chamber Business Dinner was highly successful with over 360 people in attendance. Premier Brad Wall’s speech was well received by the Yorkton business community which gave him a standing ovation at the conclusion of his remarks. Also attending the event were 11 Cabinet Ministers, 8 MLAs and various Chiefs of Staff. The objective of the Dinner is to bring government to the city to meet with the business community in order to forge new relationships and networks. Crooked Lake Agency Drum, singers, Darryl Wolfe and Shannon Crook led the Premier and other dignitaries into the Dinner. Sasktel provided tickets for students from 3 high schools and the Parkland College to attend the Dinner.

The Chamber congratulated Maple Farm Equipment, and Cornerstone Credit Union for being named on the 2010 list, and Yorkton Co-op Association Ltd. on being listed as one of the top ten contributors to the success of Federated Co-operatives Limited, which was also named in the top 100 list.

What is SEER?
Saskatchewan East Enterprise Region (SEER) is one of thirteen regions organized under Enterprise Saskatchewan’s initiative.
