Statement of Chamber Goals Unveiled
April, 1989

With a swift flip of the red cloth, Chamber of Commerce president Terry Ortynsky unveiled the chamber's new mission statement now etched in glass. "The mission of the Yorkton Chamber of Commerce is to represent the interests of business and promote economic development," reads the plaque which will soon hang in a prominent place at the Chamber's office. The purpose of a mission statement is to give the Chamber of Commerce direction and ensure they're prepared for the future, says Aldene Meis, a senior associate with Fontanie Consulting Associates. If, like the mission statement, a business cannot tell a customer what it does in 20 words or less then maybe that business has lost its sense of direction, she says. Running a business is like running a ship, she explains. "If a ship does not have direction it will eventually run aground" as will a business without direction, she told a lunch meeting for Chamber members Friday. Ms Meis worked as a facilitator for the Chamber of Commerce executive to bring out and co-ordinate their ideas for the Chamber. The result was a three-year financial strategy for the Chamber of Commerce stated simply and succinctly in their mission statement.
